DALLAS – The hottest Vancouver Canuck going into Thursday's game was the newest: former Florida Panther centre Shawn Matthias. He was also the most excited Canuck.
Playing for Vancouver quickly cured him of both.
Acquired Tuesday in the trade of goalie Roberto Luongo, Matthias made his Canuck debut and was, according to coach John Tortorella, Vancouver's best player. But the Canucks lost 6-1, leaving Matthias with no satisfaction from leading his new team with seven shots on goal. No other forward had more than three.
“It's obviously not the debut I was looking to have,” he said. “I took in a lot of information today, and as the game got going I started to feel my way into it. I've got to be better Saturday night.
“I was just trying to control what I could: my work ethic, my game. I was trying to help the team. Like I said, it wasn't the debut I was looking for.”
