Andrew Alberts playing forward is “lost in translation”

Jason Botchford The Province Vancouver defenceman Andrew Alberts may have played forward six years ago, but that was no help to him Thursday. He looked lost playing wing on the fourth line, and felt that way too. The memories did not come rushing back. Not like he had many. He played only a few shifts at forward for the Bruins in a few games. Just enough for Zdeno Chara, then with the Senators, to give him a beat down. So, it shouldn't have surprised anyone when he was caught out of position during Montreal's two first period goals Thursday. "I just got caught switching in our zone," he said. "The coaches can tell you ideas of what to do in certain situations. But when it comes down to it, you have a million things going on in your head. What do you do with the puck? Where do you go? "It's a lot different when you've been playing D for 25 years and switch over....

Alberts’ signing fills another hole

Jim Jamieson The Province The Canucks continued to fill in the gaps on their defensive corps on Wednesday, signing defenceman Andrew Alberts to a two-year deal that is worth an average of $1.225 million per season. With Alberts signed, that gives the Canucks seven NHL defencemen under contract -given that highly regarded rookie Chris Tanev is included in the group next season -and it's believed a deal with veteran Sami Salo is close. The strong implication here is that the Canucks may not go outside the organization to replace the departed Christian Ehrhoff when the free agency window opens on July 1. While Ehrhoff's offensive skills are hard to replace, Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman said he believes the incumbents have the ability to address that loss by committee. "Without a doubt, we had a tremendous amount of depth on our defence last year and we anticipate we're going to have very strong depth again this year," said Gilman during a conference call...

Alberts mired in eye of hurricane; Penalties turn blue-liner into Mr. Unpopularity

Brad Ziemer Vancouver Sun Vancouver Canuck fans of a certain vintage may have found themselves putting some new words to an old Paul McCartney & Wings song during Thursday night's series opener with the Los Angeles Kings. Something like, "We're so sorry Uncle Alberts ... but you haven't done a bloody thing all game." Except take two penalties that cost your team two goals. Defenceman Andrew Alberts was likely as happy as anyone when Mikael Samuelsson scored the overtime winner to give the Canucks a 3-2 win, although he wasn't even on the Vancouver bench to see it. He had long since been banished to the dressing room after receiving a major for boarding and a game misconduct for a second-period hit from behind on Kings forward Brad Richardson. "Obviously, you never want to take a penalty and put your team down, especially a five-minute major in the playoffs, but it wasn't intentional," Alberts said after Friday's practice. "I was just playing physical, two bodies...

Q&A with Andrew Alberts

Gordon McIntyre The Province Q: You never even got to practice with the Canucks before your first game, just a short pregame morning skate. And you had to face the Blackhawks juggernaut, of all the teams, in your debut. Did you have butterflies? A: I was nervous in the flight over from Charlotte. And I didn't sleep a whole lot the first two nights. Q: Both the Blackhawks and your new teammates think the two will meet again in the playoffs. How does Chicago compare to Washington and Pittsburgh as far as fast, high-octane offences? A: Absolutely. I'd say they compare to Washington. The Capitals have so much firepower and so do the Blackhawks. Q: Cory Schneider let you know you'd been traded to Vancouver. You were teammates for a couple of seasons at Boston College. Did you two talk about how ironic it was that you were moved and he wasn't? A: Cory's a great kid, a buddy of mine. We see each other...

New D-man expects to be a big hit; Alberts hopes Vancouver’s zone will become a black and blue-line for opponents

Brad Ziemer Vancouver Sun CHICAGO - Cory Schneider was hoping for a new hockey home. He didn't get his wish, but ended up alerting his good friend Andrew Alberts that he had just become a Vancouver Canuck. Funny how things work sometimes. Alberts was at home in Raleigh, N.C., scanning the Internet just before Wednesday's trade deadline, and really wasn't all that concerned about being moved himself. Then his phone rang and it was Schneider, his former Boston College teammate and frustrated Canucks prospect, calling to give him the news. "He said, 'I hear you're coming to Vancouver' and I'm like, 'I haven't heard a thing. Are you sure?' " Alberts said Thursday as joined his new team in Chicago. "He was the first guy to contact me and he's a real good buddy." Probably an envious one, too. Schneider was looking for a fresh start and didn't get one. "He has been waiting around for a while, but he's a good goaltender and we'll see...
