Botchford: Don’t lose sleep waiting for Canucks to hire new coach

If you’re counting sleeps until the Canucks hire their next coach, you’ll probably run out of fingers.

And maybe toes too.

Be patient. If you’ve somehow missed this by now, the Canucks don’t do anything quickly.

If they were an emergency-response team, I don’t like our chances. How would they ever make it to the heart attack victim on Wreck Beach in time?

The 911 call would come in and they’d launch into safety audits, report preparation and paramedic checklists. They’d probably even do the speed limit, before someone reminds them: Uh guys, you have sirens.

Yes, they have begun a coaching search that will be slow and methodical. But they didn’t fire Alain Vigneault and most of his staff without first spending significant time making a list of possible replacements. It’s a long one, with some familiar names and a few surprises. As of now, it does not include Lindy Ruff, and that’s not expected to change.

The Canucks are leaning toward experienced,...

Canucks notes: Kevin Bieksa is team’s nominee for Masterton Trophy

VANCOUVER — Kevin Bieksa can be cantankerous and snarly at times, especially on the ice, but the Canucks defenceman has demonstrated his heart is as big as the logo at Rogers Arena.

Last October, while NHL players were locked out, Bieksa organized a charity game at UBC that raised $200,000. He’s also worked tirelessly for mindcheck.ca, the mental health website dedicated to friend and former teammate Rick Rypien who had serious issues that led to suicide in 2011.

Bieksa was not looking to be recognized for these initiatives but he was anyway Friday when it was announced he is this year’s Canucks nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The award is for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication. It is selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

“I don’t think you do stuff like that for the acknowledgment or credit or notoriety,” Bieksa said Friday after being informed he was the nominee. “It’s just the way I was raised. The way...

Coyotes’ Shane Doan believes in a nucleus worth buying

VANCOUVER - Phoenix Coyote captain Shane Doan kept the hockey world waiting all summer. Would he take his free-agent talents somewhere else? Or would he remain with the Coyotes, the only franchise he has played for since breaking into the NHL in 1995?

He was waiting for the Coyote ownership situation to be resolved – he's still waiting – but cast his lot with the team anyway, signing a four-year contract worth $21.2 million on the eve of the September lockout.

Doan was admittedly crushed when the Greg Jamison (potential ownership) deal didn't pan out. It was another kick in the rear end.

“I'm disappointed, incredibly disappointed, it didn't get done,” Doan said. “I wanted that deal to be done and obviously that was a huge part in me signing there. That being said, I love our coaching staff, the management and players we have here. It probably came down to that. It was a little tougher decision than I ever...

Canucks lock up Alex Burrows for four years, at $4.5M a season

The Canucks signed a top-six forward who can play with the Sedins, but it wasn’t Shane Doan.

Doan’s long, drawn-out decision was finally made and, to anyone who had been following it closely, there was little surprise.

Loyal to the end, Doan went with his heart and decided to stay in Arizona. Though that does mean there’s a chance he could end up playing in Quebec in two years.

The Canucks finished as bridesmaids in the Doan sweepstakes. But they did manage to grab the bouquet.

Finally closing the gap with Alex Burrows, the Canucks signed the former East Coast Hockey League player to a four-year, $18-million extension.

Burrows was looking for $5 million a year and settled for $4.5 million. Not bad for a player who many believe has been wildly underpaid for four years, during which he was paid $8 million. Total.

“From where I came from, I’m still really happy [with that deal],” Burrows said Friday.

“I was the happiest guy when...

Shane Doan relieved to get Coyotes deal done

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Shane Doan was one of the NHL’s most coveted free agents this off-season, garnering attention from nearly half the league.

Doan listened to all the offers, out of obligation to the free-agency process, himself, his family. There were some pretty good ones, too.

But as he spoke with each of the teams interested in him, Doan made one thing clear: His top priority was to remain with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Doan got his wish Friday, signing a four-year, US $21.2-million contract with the Coyotes, a two-months-in-the-making deal that could keep one of the Phoenix area’s most popular athletes in the desert until the end of his career.

“I’m glad to get it over with and get the deal done,” Doan said from Jobing.Com Arena. “It’s a deal that’s been mostly done for a little while, but I wanted to wait a little while to see what happens.”

It was a long wait for Doan.

The teams captain had hoped to sign...

Coyotes sign captain Shane Doan to four-year deal worth $21.2 million

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- After months of deliberation, Shane Doan has decided to stay with the only franchise he's ever played for.

Doan has signed a four-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, reportedly worth US$21.2 million with a $2-million signing bonus.

Doan has been with the Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise for 16 years, serving as captain since the start of the 2003-04 season.

The 35-year-old native of Halkirk, Alta., had 22 goals and 28 assists last season, finishing third in team scoring. He has reached the 20-goal plateau 11 times in his career.

In his career, Doan has 318 goals, 470 assists, 788 points and 1,071 penalty minutes in 1,198 games. He was drafted by the former Jets seventh overall in the 1995 NHL draft, playing one season in Winnipeg before the team relocated to Phoenix.

Doan was a free agent this off-season, and while he indicated a preference to stay in Phoenix he was talking to other teams due to the Coyotes' volatile ownership situation.

Canucks, Burrows a long way apart in contract talks

If the Canucks are going to sign Alex Burrows to an extension they are going to have to close a significant gap.

Burrows’ agent Paul Corbeil said the two sides are continuing their discussions but have a ways to go, and have been unable to find common ground on either term or money.

Burrows, like many NHL players this summer, is looking to squeeze a longer-term deal in before the CBA expires on Saturday. On that front, the Canucks are on the same page.

But for how long?

Burrows will be 32 when his current, bargain-bin deal — four-years $8 million, expires in July — and the Canucks have long been uneasy paying players top dollar after the age of 34. Though they’ve made exceptions before and would love to make another one if Shane Doan would ever sign their offer.

Recently, we’ve seen players like Scott Hartnell and Wayne Simmonds sign six-year extensions.

“That’s what we’re looking at from...

Shane Doan, unbelievably, has still not signed with Phoenix

Shane Doan has stuck to his Mats Sundin guns all summer long and as his 13th….or was it 14th….deadline approaches, once again the fans of the NHL crowd around their TV’s (just go with it) to see “The Doancision.” And while the Doan saga lacks the car crash appeal of Lebron James stabbing his hometown in the heart on national TV, it still holds plenty of drama for many people involved.

For the fans of the Coyotes, Shane Doan is their Trevor Linden. Not only are they dealing with the potential loss of Shane Doan, they’ve also had to deal with the potential loss of their team for several years. It’s hard not to feel sorry for them, until you remember Uncle Gary would sooner die clutching the Coyotes to his chest, instead of dropping them to pull his parachute cord. The Phoenix Coyotes are the NHL’s version of the Walking Dead. They just won’t die.

For the fans of...

Reports Shane Doan has signed four-year $21.5 million extension with Coyotes

The Canucks were hoping a gold-medal winning veteran with a cap hit of about $5 million would be reporting to training camp this month.

And it's true, one is planning to. But he's the wrong one.

Roberto Luongo maybe in Vancouver next week and prepared to report to camp, if camp ever happens. So he's in. For now. But Shane Doan appears to be out, according to reports which have him agreeing to a four-year, $21.5 million extension with the Phoenix Coyotes, pending the completed sale of the club to Greg Jamison.

The Canucks had tabled a similar offer, though the money wasn't quite as much, and still believe they have the best chance to be Doan's Plan B. But that Plan B is disappearing faster than those Polar bears on Lost.

Doan represented an opportunity to significantly and instantly improve the Canucks, which explains why they were pursuing him with a courtship which included a dinner at the city's Italian Kitchen.

Shane Doan says deal to stay in Phoenix is done

Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes, who as one of the most prized free agents of the National Hockey League off-season was wined and dined in many a city -- including Vancouver -- appears to be staying in Arizona.

According to a Thursday night story by Sarah McLeean of the Arizona Republic News, Doan appeared on XTRA 910 Radio earlier in the day and did a candid interview with co-hosts Dan Bickley and Mike Jurecki.

Doan says a deal between him and the Coyotes is "done." All that he's waiting on to put pen to paper is Greg Jamison officially acquiring the team.

Doan confirms what's been speculated for awhile now, that Jamison has secured the money to purchase the Coyotes and the money is waiting in escrow.

Said Doan: "... Mr. Jamison has the money. Mr. Bettman has said it's all good, according to the NHL, and it's going to go through. It's just a matter of getting the lease agreement...

Shane Doan: Worth more than $3 million a year to Canucks?

We are still waiting on Shane Doan, are we not? Some team, at some point, will fork over millions of dollars for a 35-year-old Doan. He will be 36, plus a few tenths of a year, when the NHL season finally does get under-way.

Doan's entire career can be summed up in a word: durability. Not since he turned 22 has Doan played fewer than 72 games in a regular season, which has helped him put up 11 20-plus-goal seasons. That's eighth among active players.

Doan has been a slight plus-possession player his entire career, faring a little bit better at controlling the shot clock than his teammates. He is not elite, was never elite, and will never be elite. Doan is a durable leader who plugs away at the opposition, being above average for a very, very long time.

A noble player, that's Doan, and some team will fork over millions. That team may be the Vancouver Canucks. It could...

Shane Doan’s latest drop dead date could means more than the others

Why Shane Doans latest drop dead date means more than the others

-->

When it comes down to it, this summer has been nothing new for Vancouverites. If we’re being honest, we’ve been wishing for the Phoenix Coyotes to fail since they began.

Sure, a trip to Jobing.com Arena is a cheap date. We like that. But that’s about all we like about the “experiment”, as we condescendingly call it, in the desert.

The NHL’s Sun Belt expansion upsets us. It upsets us because the Canucks have never won a Stanley Cup and we want them to really badly. The very idea that apathetic southern American markets like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Carolina, and Tampa Bay could celebrate Stanley Cup wins — and many have — while we enter decade five of riotous desire is downright infuriating. And thus we root for their demise.

All of this is to say that the circumstances of this summer, which have Vancouverites cheering for Phoenix to...

Shane Doan’s agent sets deadline, Canucks still in running

A big NHL free-agent domino is expected to finally fall.

While several suitors, including the Vancouver Canucks, have patiently waited while Shane Doan hopes the Phoenix Coyotes ownership picture can be resolved so the club's long-serving captain can remain in the desert, his agent Terry Bross has changed the timeline.

A looming Sept. 15 lockout could create uncertainty how long-term contracts of players 35 and older will be affected. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, multi-year deals to those players count against the salary cap in the second year, even if a player is inactive. Hence a deadline, finally.

"[It has to] be done before the 15th, otherwise we're signing somewhere because we don't know what the new CBA is going to look like and I don't know if it's going to limit any scope of a contract," Bross told the Arizona Republic. "We want to make sure we sign before then. I guess in that respect, time is ticking."

While prospective...

NHL Headlines This Offseason That Didn’t Exist (But Might As Well Have)

*Returns to the basement*

Great, all my stuff is still here.

basementrebuchettsmall NHL Headlines This Offseason That Didnt Exist (But Might As Well Have)

(Nobody better have touched my tomato trebuchet!)

Friends, this glorious British Columbian Summer of ours is coming to an end. Labour day is fast approaching and with it comes the end of the NHL offseason (right??). Since the Canucks were eliminated by the expected cup champs back in April (see championship flowchart HERE), I’ve been living in the deep wilderness, soul-searching and trying to figure out just what went wrong with the 2011/2012 Canucks.

That was a lie, I was actually in and out-of-town working (may or may not have been gainfully employed by “the man”).

In all honesty, this has been a pretty uneventful offseason on the left coast, and I for one am pretty disappointed. Things seemed so promising with the re-signing of “The Red Headed Stop Child”...
