Wiser to the value of a visor; Being hit near eyes a wake-up call for Weise

Elliott Pap Vancouver Sun Dale Weise has seen the light after his fright - and it might involve wearing a visor for the remainder of his career. The Vancouver Canuck fourth-liner suffered a nasty nine-stitch gash between the eyes at practice Tuesday - but not a broken nose, he emphasized - and admitted to being a little shaken by the episode. He was struck by the puck while defending a rush against Alex Burrows. The disc rode up his own stick and nailed him. "You know what? I've always kind of been on the fence about wearing a visor," Weise said Wednesday. "But your eyes are so important and it was definitely a wake-up call for me. After I got hit with the puck there, I didn't want to open my eyes because I knew it was somewhere around there. When I did open them, I was leaking [blood] but I could see and I was happy about that." If Weise, 23, needed...

Weise fights back with goal; He backed down in Boston, but stepped up in Florida

Ben Kuzma The Province SUNRISE, FLA. - Dale Weise the weasel looked like an artist at the easel. Berated by the Boston media for refusing to fight Shawn Thornton on Saturday, the Vancouver Canucks winger showed a more important side Monday. In an uninspiring 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers, there was some inspiration in the fourth-liner's offensive game. Not only did Weise score in the opening period, he nearly scored again in the frame on a breakaway to send the right kind of message. Yes, Weise will fight but there's more to his game and that could go a long way to keeping him employed at the NHL level. "I'm not just a guy who goes out there and wants to fight every night," said Weise. "I think I can bring more and score some goals. My role is to be physical and bring some energy and I thought as a line we were pretty good and made some things hap-pen tonight." In an alignment with...

Q&A: Dale Weise

Gord McIntyre The Province McINTYRE: Tell me about your first NHL game, last December against the Flyers. You had a goal that didn't count and you got in a fight with Daniel Carcillo, didn't you? WEISE: Yep. It was a real whirlwind for me. We [Connecticut Whale] had a morning skate and the coach asked me to hang around, which I thought was a little weird - normally when he wants to see you, it's not good. He brought me into his office and said I was getting called up. I flew to Philly, it was an 11 a.m. game the next day, a Saturday, I didn't have a lot of time to think about it, just hopped in and played pretty well. I hit a post on a partial break, scored one that should have counted as a goal, then had the fight with Carcillo. McINTYRE: Why wasn't the goal allowed? WEISE: They said I kicked it in. I mean, on one...

It all started on a backyard rink

Ben Kuzma The Province The discussion had turned to global warming and how those harsh prairie winters of bone-chilling cold and mountainous snow banks have been replaced by a more temperate climate. "Either way you look at it, it's cold in Winnipeg all the time," reminded Dale Weise. "I was on the outdoor rinks all the time. People have no idea. It's minus-50 and I'd have three layers of clothes on and a toque, mitts and gloves. It was awesome. I loved it. "It's great for young kids to develop the skills. In minor hockey you're really only practising once or twice a week when you're a kid. On the prairies, you're fortunate to get out anytime you want. A couple of times, I don't want to admit it, but I'd skip class and skate with my buddies, and that is probably what got me to where I am today." Today, Weise is an intriguing story for the Canucks. Claimed off waivers from...

Fourth-line help on the way here; Physical winger Dale weise ‘ecstatic’ about move to Vancouver

Jim Jamieson The Province On a day when most NHL clubs were reducing roster numbers for the start of the regular season, the Canucks were adding to theirs. The Canucks claimed physical winger Dale Weise from the New York Rangers on Tuesday after the Blueshirts attempted to pass the 23-year-old Winnipeg native through waivers and send him to their Connecticut Whale AHL farm team. The move says the Canucks weren't completely satisfied with their fourthline renovation project for the coming season and decided that a player the rest of the league passed on - but also someone they'd inquired about a couple of times last season - would be an upgrade. The acquisition of Weise came at the expense of right-winger Victor Oreskovich, who improved as the preseason went on but didn't show enough consistency in using his big body against opponents for head coach Alain Vigneault. Oreskovich, 25, was put on waivers by the Canucks on Tuesday and, if not claimed by 9...
